Do kids need help developing their fine motor skills?
Just reminded today that myelin, the protein in the brain that is important for the central nervous system and impacts motor development and coordination, increases between the ages of 6 and 8. Does that mean that we should be mindful of our writing expectations for younger children?
Basically a young child's brain lacks the myelin necessary for fine motor skills to to become perfected. We probably need to be patient and let brain development take it's course. In the meantime, we can let children play, explore, color, and practice fine motor skills so that myelin in their brains becomes stronger. Let's take the no pressure, relaxed approach - especially during the early years when children's brains process information more slowly.
Brain development happens gradually.
